Guys and Dolls at CCS
Guys ‘n’ Dolls at CCS – Move over GLEE!!
Comedy, love, romance, gangsters and dancing….Guys and Dolls really does have it all! There has always been a strong tradition of musical theatre in CCS. Once again this year the music and drama departments have joined forces to produce an amazing musical theatre production. Last year’s ‘Fame’ was a resounding success and this year’s ‘Guys and Dolls’ promises to be something very special. ‘We’ve pulled out all the stops this year’ said one of the co-directors, music teacher Niamh McCarthy.
The Co-directors admit that getting boys on stage is always a challenge but this year’s show breaks the mould with a strong ‘guy’ presence – even if they are all gangsters!!
‘There is a great buzz around the school at the moment. There will be over 60 students involved both on stage and behind the scenes. All the departments join together and lines blur creating a hive of activity in the final weeks,’ said drama teacher and co-director Ann O Regan.
Guys and Dolls is a 1950 musical by Damon Runyon. We meet loveable thugs and their long-suffering dolls. Nathan Detroit runs the “oldest established permanent floating crap game” in New York. He is desperately seeking a place to play while simultaneously striving to keep his fiancé of 14 years from becoming his wife!
Without exception, the performances in the principal roles are outstanding. Dan Coffey (5th Year) is Sky. He’s got the look, the “not as bad as he’d like to appear” demeanour, and a great voice. Emily Aherne (5th year) has a lovely voice and a great presence, morphing from prim “Mission Doll” to a lady in love. Nathan Detroit, Andrew McGrath (4th Year) is completely believable as a ne’er-do-well who does, in fact, do well. Finally the amazing Adelaide – fun and madly, deeply in love with Nathan played by the talented Anna O Rourke (5th Year). There are several smaller featured roles in this show including Nicely-Nicely Johnson, played by Adam Doyle (2nd Year)
Some of the best music you’ll ever hear including, “Guys and Dolls,” “Luck Be a Lady,” and “Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat’ are in the show but just to jazz things up a bit several modern songs are also included…Move over GLEE!!!!!
Show on Tuesday Feb. 1st to Friday 4th in the school. Tickets available at the school.
